What Is Osseointegration In Dental Implants Placement?
Posted on 11/7/2022 by Front Desk
The process of installing dental implants takes several steps from inserting the dental screw base to placing the connector known as an abutment to placing the cap. Once the entire process is finished, you have natural-looking teeth that function like the teeth being replaced. One process that implant placement goes through is osseointegration.
What is Osseointegration?
Once a dentist inserts a dental screw for implants, osseointegration takes place. Osseointegration is the fusing together of the titanium or zirconia screw with the bone. A few days after getting the implant, several biological events involving bone regenerations start to occur. Numerous growth and differentiation factors help regulate the bone regeneration process and are usually released to the implant region by the body. It takes around 3 to six months for complete osseointegration to happen. Once attained, you go back to the dentist's office for placement of the abutment and the caps.
The Importance of Osseointegration
Osseointegration ensures that the implant remains firmly in place within the jaw. This way, you have a stable implant that does not risk becoming loose. Usually, because the bone cells have attached directly to the metal screw, they become one thing.
If osseointegration doesn't occur properly, you may have a weak implant that could become loose over time, leading to implant failure. To prevent this from happening, a dentist ensures that there is the desired amount of bone volume and mass to allow the osseointegration to occur properly. If not, bone grafting may first be conducted to rebuild the eroded or shrunken bone and ensure it is sufficient to have the screw inserted and offer the support and stability needed for the prosthesis.
