Factors That Affect The Life Of Your Crowns

Posted on 10/10/2022 by Front Desk
Factors That Affect The Life Of Your CrownsThe lifetime of dental crowns is one of the questions that come up when a patient visits a dental office. If you're curious about the number of years or decades the dental crowns will last, it is important you get the facts from a dentist. If you have not received other restorative dentistry work previously and you don't expose the crowns to external damage, the restorations can last up to 30 years or more. The average lifespan of dental crowns is somewhere between one and three decades. Having said that, here are factors that can influence the lifespan of your crowns.

Tooth Grinding

Bruxism is a habit in which you constantly grind and clench teeth. This habit can damage your crowns in addition to your natural teeth. You may end up with more dental issues in the long term.

Improper Daily Care

When you fail to brush and floss, your crowns may suffer. Reassess your oral care habits if you doubt them. Take care of your teeth to ensure that you prevent serious oral health problems. Make sure you visit a dentist to get a personalized oral care plan.

Bad Chewing Habits

Some people use their teeth to open a bottle, but using teeth as a tool is a big mistake. You should not underestimate how weak your teeth may be. You may think that because you have done several bottle opening exercises in the past, your dental crowns are strong. However, they may be weakening slowly without your knowledge. Only a single activity of bottle opening and your crown is damaged or fractured. Do not chew ice or try to break objects with your teeth. You may damage your natural teeth and the crowns.

If you happen to break or damage your crowns, visit us for restoration. Most people who have dental insurance are able to cover a crown replacement every 5 to 10 years.
