What is Prosthodontics?

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Front Desk
What is Prosthodontics?Prosthodontics is the branch of dental medicine that deals with the design, creation, and fitting of artificial substitutions for the teeth and other mouth parts. The following include subspecialties covered in prosthodontics.

Dental Implants

These are artificial devices mostly made of titanium or titanium alloys. A dental implant is shaped like a cylinder, or a screw and it is used to substitute the root of a tooth. A properly fit implant provides a strong and stable base for the support or retention of a denture, a bridge, or a maxillofacial prosthesis.

If properly placed, implants are highly successful hence providing patients with a lot of satisfaction in their use. They have to be placed by a dentist who has acquired higher competencies.

Fixed Prosthodontics

This branch of prosthodontics focuses on the permanently attached dental prosthesis. These dental restorations include bridges, inlays, onlays, veneers, and crowns. These restorations are made in the dental laboratory and can be used to restore spanning areas where teeth are missing, single or even multiple teeth.

Removable Prosthodontics

They are commonly referred to as dentures. Removable prosthodontics is concerned with the prosthesis which deals with the replacement of soft tissues and the tooth.

This can involve the replacement of all the teeth that are missing -complete dentures or a few teeth that are missing – partial dentures. They can be made of pure plastic or a combination of plastic and metal.

Maxillofacial Prosthodontics

Maxillofacial prosthodontics deals with the rehabilitation of patients who suffer from congenital or acquired defects on their faces or in their mouths. Acquired defects are a result of cancer of the face or mouth which results from neurological defects like stroke. Congenital defects are related to the palate and cleft lip.

The fabricated prosthesis tends to cover up these defects. Maxillofacial prosthodontists have undergone advanced training in complex oral treatment. For more information about our specialty, please feel free to call us.
