My Teeth Are Discolored By Tetracycline: Consider Porcelain Veneers

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Front Desk
My Teeth Are Discolored By Tetracycline: Consider Porcelain VeneersIn the early 1950s, tetracycline was introduced as a new option for antibiotics. Doctors would use it in patients who reacted to other kinds of antibiotics. Although tetracycline introduction was welcomed with a lot of hopes, sadly, it almost immediately began showing its negatives. The antibiotic showed patterns of teeth staining, especially in children.

Can Whitening Improve Tetracycline Staining?

No, not at all! People mistakenly think that tetracycline staining can be resolved by teeth whitening, however, that is not the case. While staining from red wine and smoking can be resolved with whitening, in the case of tetracycline, it's a different thing. It affects the dentin, the interior part of a tooth. If dentin becomes stained, that is permanent staining, therefore, whitening cannot work. In such as situation, porcelain veneers can be placed over the teeth to cover the stains.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a kind of restoration that works to resolve various dental issues. If you have chips, issues with tooth size, and other cosmetic problems, you can consider porcelain veneers as a treatment option. Also if you have permanently stained teeth, you can seek porcelain veneers to change the appearance of your teeth. A dentist places thin shells of porcelain over the front teeth to cover up or mask the flaws.

The dentist can use the CEREC system that allows you to have your porcelain veneers in just one appointment. This computer-aided system makes the job of fitting porcelains easier. If you need same-day veneers, you can opt for this system. Alternatively, you can go for the lab fabricated porcelain veneers where you will have to make several visits to a dentist. Talk to us if you have tooth staining to see what has caused it. If it is superficial, meaning it has occurred on the tooth surface, whitening may help. However, if it's deep in the dentin, porcelain veneers may be the option. Contact us today.
