Is Using Your Teeth Roughly Will Likely Chip Your Veneers?

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Front Desk
Is Using Your Teeth Roughly Will Likely Chip Your Veneers?Dental veneers are appliances that help improve your oral structure. A veneer is typically a layer of material placed over your tooth to protect it from damage. These appliances can help improve your smile's aesthetics, giving you the confidence, you need. The two common types of materials used to make a veneer are porcelain and composite. These materials are strong and durable. However, just like your natural teeth, veneers can chip when subjected to excessive pressure. Furthermore, when you use your teeth roughly, you can cause chipping on veneers.

Biting on Hard Foods

The act of biting on hard foods can distort the structure of veneers, making them chip. Given that veneers are placed on your tooth surface to protect it from damage, biting on hard foods will expose them to excessive pressure. Hard foods like ice can negatively impact veneers. This is why it is a good idea to avoid chewing on hard foods. If you have to use them, cook them until they are soft enough for easy chewing. You should also stick to using soft foods if you want your veneers to last longer.

Grinding and Clenching

Grinding or clenching your teeth can also cause chipping on your veneers. Also known as bruxism, grinding exerts excessive pressure on your teeth that can cause breakages. There are two types of bruxism; sleep bruxism and awake bruxism. Sleep bruxism is the most common one, and it happens when one is asleep. To protect your veneers from the effects of grinding, you should wear a mouthguard when sleeping. This will help limit the impact of sleep bruxism. Therefore, you should avoid using your teeth too roughly to keep veneers intact. Acts like brushing too hard can also damage veneers. Visit our offices for more information on the causes of chipping on veneers.
