Psychological Impact of Tooth loss

Posted on 3/22/2021 by Front Desk
Psychological Impact of Tooth lossLosing a tooth can be traumatic on many levels. Looking strictly at the physical aspect of things, tooth loss can be extremely painful. Since tooth loss requires a significant alteration in the way you eat and chew food, there are going to be major changes in your diet and dieting habits.

Research in this regard has proven that tooth loss can cause intense distress and emotions, both mentally and physically. In many pre-historic cultures and societies, tooth loss was viewed as a normal part of life without any major repercussions. But, with the more modern and contemporary advancements in prosthodontics, every individual expects to have a full set of teeth at all times. When that fails to happen, people can end up being disappointed and show their resentment through different means.

A Confidence Problem

Tooth loss is a more common instance today than what most people can imagine. In fact, over a 100 million people in America alone are missing at least one of their natural pearly white teeth. While some people aren't affected by the loss, there are others that take the loss seriously and are gripped by confidence problems.

Tooth loss can often be considered as a disconnection from one's own body and can eventually lead to a dramatic drop in the happiness felt by an individual, and the confidence they show in their own abilities.

Besides just the basic concerns over their physical appearance, people with tooth loss even stop eating in public places. They shy away from smiling in front of the public and can disrupt their intimacy in life by avoiding kissing. Everyday activities become harder to manage and the psychological distress of tooth loss can kill their quality of life.
