When to Come in
A conservative artificial tooth solution, a bridge is a custom dental appliance which bridges a space once occupied by natural teeth. The teeth on either side of the space act as an anchor point to secure the bridge in place. While it is considered a permanent artificial tooth restoration, it can come loose over time. Patients typically complain about bite problems or over sensitivity to temperature changes in food and beverages. There may be a slight bit of movement with the bridge too. When a bridge becomes loose, it can create a small space beneath where bacteria can collect creating a potential for decay. While a loose bridge is not considered an emergency, it does warrant the attention of a professional. Patients should not attempt to repair their loose bridges at home.
Consequences of a Loose Bridge
There are two main concerns when a bridge becomes loose. One is the possibility of damaging the actual appliance by biting incorrectly on it. While it is sturdy, it can be damaged if not properly used. The other concern is an injury to the oral cavity. A loose appliance can rub or irritate the gums or in some cases even cut the soft tissue. This can create the need for more invasive treatments to repair the damage. This can create an increased investment in money and time to the patient to get it taken care of.
