Come See Us if Your Jaw Has Been Popping or Clicking

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Front Desk
Come See Us if Your Jaw Has Been Popping or ClickingHas your jaw been popping or clicking when you open your mouth? Do you find chewing uncomfortable, or feel like your jaw frequently “locks” open or closed? There is a good chance you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from TMD. Our office can help.

What is TMD?

TMD is short for temporomandibular disorders. The temporomandibular joint is the joint connecting your jawbone to your skull, and TMD involves this joint as well as the nerves and muscles around it. Irritation to this joint or its accompanying nerves and muscles can result in the many uncomfortable TMD symptoms you are probably all too familiar with, including that popping or clicking sensation in your jaw. There are many potential causes for TMD, including bite issues, an uneven jaw, teeth grinding and clenching, jaw injuries, and even anxiety.

How We Can Help

In order to figure out the best way to address your TMD issues, we need to first determine the cause. If you have worn down teeth or a misaligned bite due to tooth loss, an injury, or teeth grinding, there are many different restorative options available. A dental bridge, crowns, implants, or partial dentures can help restore alignment to your smile and prevent further irritation to your jaw and temporomandibular joint. Crowns and veneers can help if a cracked tooth is causing your bite issues. We can also fit you for a custom mouth guard if teeth grinding is the reason behind your TMD symptoms.

If you already wear dentures, your TMD issues could be the result of your dentures not fitting properly. We can adjust your dentures, fit you for a new set, or even assess you for a special type of dentures called neuromuscular dentures, which are designed to align your jaw. If you have noticed your jaw popping or clicking, or any other TMD symptoms, call our office today.
