If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, dental bonding might be a good option for you. Dental bonding can be used to repair a variety of cosmetic concerns such as chips, gaps, discoloration, and discrepancies in tooth size or shape.
What is Dental Bonding?
When we perform dental bonding in our office, we use a composite resin material similar to plastic to either fill in gaps or chips in teeth, reshape a tooth, or cover up a discolored tooth. The procedure is relatively quick and simple, and is usually completed in just one appointment. First we use a tool to roughen the surface of the tooth that will be bonded, then we coat it with a special liquid that allows the bonding agent to adhere to the tooth. We apply the composite bonding over your tooth, form it into the appropriate shape, and harden it in place using an ultraviolet light. The composite material will be matched to the correct shade of your teeth.
Dental Bonding Benefits
Dental bonding is a versatile procedure with numerous benefits. It is completed much faster than other cosmetic dental procedures such as crown or veneer placement, both of which typically require at least two office visits. It is also less invasive than those alternatives, which involve the affected tooth or teeth needing to be shaved down in preparation for crown or veneer placement. Finally, dental bonding is much more affordable than both crowns and veneers. Veneers and crowns often cost thousands of dollars, whereas with dental bonding, your cosmetic concerns can be repaired for about 100 to 400 dollars per tooth.
Dental Bonding Disadvantages
While dental bonding is a great option for addressing minor chips or cracks in teeth, as well as other concerns such as discoloration or gaps, it is not effective for repairing more extensive cracks or significant damage caused by decay and disease. Bonding does not last as long as veneers or crowns, as the composite resin material is not as durable as porcelain. To learn more about dental bonding, call our office today.
