Most Important Rules When Taking Care of Dentures

Most Important Rules When Taking Care of DenturesWhen you're missing some of your natural teeth, we may recommend that you wear dentures. Taking care of them is really no different than taking care of your natural teeth, though there are a few important rules you should remember. Doing so will help maintain your dentures longer.

What You Must Remember When Wearing Dentures

One way dentures are different from your natural teeth is that you should always take your dentures out before going to bed at night. Not only will this give your mouth tissues an opportunity to recover, but this is also a great time to clean your dentures. Just make sure that when you remove them from your mouth you are careful not to break them. This is why you should stand over a folded towel or a sink full of water when removing them.

Cleaning them is important because you don't want stains, tartar, or bacteria building up on them. Doing so is simple, just brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mildly abrasive toothpaste. Make sure you also rinse out your mouth and massage your gums with a washcloth. As you do so, you should also think about if there's been any changes to the way your dentures fit. When this happens, you'll know it's time to make an appointment with our office to have them relined or you may possibly need a new set. This is because as you grow older your jaw bone structure will slowly change, making it so that your dentures no longer fit properly.

When you have dentures, it's also important to maintain routine office visits with us. If you don't already have one set up, make sure you give us a call so we can schedule one for you today. We look forward to helping you and your dentures enjoy a long, healthy life together.
