Most Common Denture Mistakes New Denture Wearers Often Make

Most Common Denture Mistakes New Denture Wearers Often MakeAfter you get new dentures, it is common to want to jump right into the kind of lifestyle you used to have. If you have had to give up certain foods, for example, you might decide to splurge and go to a restaurant serving that type of food.

While this is certainly understandable, keep in mind that there are a few common mistakes that new denture wearers make. Knowing about these mistakes and avoiding them can help you to get the most out of your new dentures.

Rushing into Things

Before you go out for a big steak, keep in mind that your gum tissue is going to need some time to adjust to the dentures. The pulling, pushing, and rubbing of the dentures against the gum tissue can cause soreness and tenderness, especially if you are not used to wearing dentures.

Along these same lines, it is not a good idea to start wearing your dentures for 16 hours a day right off the bat. Rather, slowly ease into your denture wearing. Perhaps you should consider limiting your time with the dentures at first, and slowly increase the length of time you wear them. This will give your gum tissue time to adjust to having the dentures pressed up against it.

Subpar Cleaning Efforts

Just because your dentures cannot develop cavities does not mean they do not need to be cleaned. On the contrary, you need to be sure to carefully clean your dentures just like you did your natural teeth. Be sure to remove the dentures, brush them carefully, and put them in a good disinfecting soak. Before you put them back in your mouth you will want to rinse them with clean water.

Adjusting to your new dentures will take time. By avoiding these “rookie mistakes” you can help make the process go more smoothly.
