How to Prevent Denture Halitosis

Posted on 12/15/2018 by Front Desk
How to Prevent Denture HalitosisYou might think that having dentures means an end to bad breath. After all, with no more teeth to brush, you might reason that issues with plaque are a thing of the past. Unfortunately, this is not exactly the case. While you may not get cavities, plaque still forms in your mouth.

In addition, if you do not maintain your dentures correctly, you can develop halitosis from other sources, too. Here are some things you can to do make sure your breath stays fresh and clean.

Use a Good Denture Adhesive

One way that dentures can lead to halitosis is by trapping food particles underneath the dentures. To keep this from happening, make sure that you are using a quality denture adhesive. Without little pockets to trap food, your breath will stay fresh longer.

Clean Your Dentures Well

Even though you don't have teeth, plaque still forms in your mouth. For this reason you need to make sure to remove your dentures and thoroughly clean them every evening. The first step is giving them a good soak in a denture cleansing solution. You should check your local pharmacy to see what options are available to you, or contact us and we can give you a recommendation.

After soaking the dentures, use a quality denture toothbrush to clean them. This will help ensure that all the plaque is removed from the nooks and crevices. Following the brushing, you should rinse the dentures with clean water.

Learning to keep your dentures clean will take some adjustment, but once you get into the routine, it shouldn't take any more work than your traditional oral hygiene practices. If you have any questions or need recommendations about good denture adhesives or rinses, feel free to give us a call. As always, we are here to help you keep a smile that is healthy and happy, so reach out to us whenever you need to!
