What Can't You Eat with Dentures?

If you have recently gotten a new set of dentures, you are probably still going through a period of adjustment. One thing that you will need to adjust will be your eating habits.

Although technology has allowed us to take great steps forward in creating dentures that closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, the fact of the matter is that they simply are not able to function exactly like your natural teeth in every situation.

Dentures Are Removable

Remember that, unlike other dental constructions such as dental implants, your dentures were designed to come out. This means that they are much easier to remove than other types of dental work.

Because they are easier to remove, dentures cannot hold up to this same heavy-duty chewing activity that other dental constructions can. For example, if you insist on eating a food that is very sticky-something such as saltwater taffy-you should expect that your dentures are going to become loose as you chew.

It is probably best to avoid any type of food that will place a strong pull away from your gum tissue. Likewise, if you insist on eating food that must be chewed vigorously, you might find that your dentures begin to loosen or even come off of your gum tissue entirely.

Adjusting Your Diet
Although it might seem that you are going to have to give up a lot of the food that you enjoy, a better way to look at it is that having dentures allows you to enjoy and more food than you otherwise would be able to beat. If you did not have dentures, you would probably be reduced to eating creamy foods such as yogurt and soups.

By being careful with your food selections, you will soon find that you are able to eat a great deal of food you otherwise would not be able to consume. By focusing on enjoying the food that you can eat, you'll maximize your enjoyment of your dentures.
