Made from molds of your mouth, dentures can be used to replace a section of missing teeth (partial dentures) or an entire arch (full dentures). Dentures are designed to improve your life, however, for some, they may cause an allergic reaction.
What Causes Denture Allergies?
An allergic reaction to your dentures can be the result of several different factors:| • | While rare, you may be allergic to the acrylic used for the base. |
| • | If you have partial dentures, your allergy may be caused by the metal used for the clasps. |
| • | Allergies may not be a result of the denture itself, but a product for dentures. You may experience a reaction to an ingredient in your denture cleaning solution or your denture adhesive. |
Signs of an Allergy
If you do have an allergic reaction to your dentures, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:| • | Pain and irritation. |
| • | Redness and swelling. |
| • | Ill-fitting dentures, which can then lead to sores. |
| • | Burning sensation. |
What Should You Do?
The odds of being allergic to your dentures are very small. If you are experiencing any of the previously mentioned symptoms, there are a few things you can do. One of the first things you can do is to switch brands of denture cleaner.
If you have only recently started using denture adhesive and never had a problem before, try switching to a different one. If these solutions don't work, call your dentist, who will check your dentures, and your mouth, for issues. You may even be referred to an allergist, which can help to confirm if you truly do have an allergy to any of the materials used in your dentures themselves.
