What to Expect during Your First 30 Days with Dentures

Posted on 10/20/2016 by Front Desk
A pair of dentures floating inside of a glass jar.If you are new to dentures, adjusting to wearing this new appliance can take some time. After all, you will suddenly have a foreign, hard plastic object in your mouth, so it's important that you give yourself time to get used to living with dentures. The good news is that after the first month, you should notice quite the improvement.

Your First Two Weeks with Dentures

During the first two weeks that you have dentures, you should be getting to know your new appliance and how to eat, swallow, and speak with them in. Initially, you may experience an increase in salivation, but this is normal. As your mouth adjusts to the new appliance, your salivary glands may overcompensate. Eventually production will return to normal, but until then, try to swallow more frequently.

Sore spots and areas of irritation are also common during the early weeks. This usually results from minor movements of the dentures. If the discomfort doesn't start to get better, be sure to consult with your dentist to see if an adjustment is needed.

The Following Two Weeks
You may be starting to get used to the foreign object in your mouth at this time, but you might still feel that you need to learn to eat or talk all over again. Eating soft foods like soup and scrambled eggs may be a good idea during this time frame, and you might also want to spend some time speaking with your new appliance in. Use a mirror to watch yourself when you try to produce especially difficult sounds, especially words with "th" or "s" sounds.

By the end of the month, you will likely be able to treat yourself by eating some of your favorite foods. You should be able to enjoy your beautiful new smile without discomfort.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your new dentures.
