Keep Your Dentures Snug - Tips and Tricks

While they offer a fantastic way to restore your smile and chewing function, they can sometimes feel loose or uncomfortable. This is especially true as your mouth naturally changes shape over time.

The good news is that there are several things you can do to keep your dentures feeling snug and secure. Here are a few tips and tricks from your friendly neighborhood prosthodontist:

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Just like your natural teeth, your dentures require proper care to maintain their fit and function. This means brushing them regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Be sure to remove them at night and soak them in a denture cleaning solution to remove any food particles or plaque buildup.

Use a Denture Adhesive

Denture adhesives can be a great way to provide extra stability for your dentures, especially when you're first getting used to them. These adhesives come in various forms, including creams, powders, and strips. Experiment with different types to find one that works best for you. Remember, though, that adhesives are not a substitute for proper oral hygiene and should not be used as a long-term solution for loose dentures.

Get Regular Checkups

Seeing your prosthodontist regularly is essential for maintaining the health of your mouth and your dentures. During these checkups, your prosthodontist will examine your dentures for any signs of wear or damage and make any necessary adjustments to ensure they fit properly. They can also check your oral health for any underlying issues that may be contributing to denture problems.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet is important for overall oral health, including denture wearers. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage your dentures or irritate your gums. Opt for softer foods that are easier to chew and less likely to cause problems.

Watch Out for Warning Signs

If your dentures are feeling increasingly loose, it's important to pay attention to other warning signs. These can include pain or irritation in your gums, difficulty chewing or speaking, and clicking or popping sounds when you move your mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms, be sure to see your prosthodontist as soon as possible.

Embrace Your New Smile

Living with dentures can be an adjustment, but it doesn't have to be difficult. By following these simple tips and tricks, you can keep your dentures feeling snug and secure, allowing you to enjoy your new smile with confidence.
