How Much of Your Tooth Do You Lose When You Get a Bridge?

Traditional Dental Bridge

Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge. They consist of an artificial tooth (pontic) that is held in place by crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap. To prepare for a traditional bridge, your dentist will need to remove a significant amount of tooth structure from the two adjacent teeth. This is necessary to create enough space for the crowns to be placed.

The amount of tooth structure removed can vary depending on the size and shape of your teeth. However, you can expect to lose about 50% of the tooth structure on each of the adjacent teeth.

Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever bridge is similar to a traditional bridge, but it only uses one tooth for support. This type of bridge is typically used when there is only one tooth missing on one side of the gap.

To prepare for a cantilever bridge, your dentist will need to remove a significant amount of tooth structure from the supporting tooth. This is necessary to create enough stability for the bridge.

The amount of tooth structure removed can vary depending on the size and shape of your tooth. However, you can expect to lose about 75% of the tooth structure on the supporting tooth.

Maryland Bridge

A Maryland bridge is a less invasive type of bridge. It is made of a metal framework that is bonded to the back of the teeth on either side of the gap. No crowns are needed for this type of bridge.

Maryland bridges are a good option for people who want to preserve as much of their natural tooth structure as possible. However, they are not as strong as traditional bridges and may not be suitable for all patients.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are another option for replacing missing teeth. Implants are small titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone. Once the implants have healed, artificial teeth (crowns) can be attached to them.

Dental implants are the most conservative option for replacing missing teeth. They do not require any alteration of the adjacent teeth. However, they are also the most expensive option.

Conclusion

The amount of tooth structure removed when you get a bridge depends on the type of bridge you get. Traditional bridges require the removal of a significant amount of tooth structure, while Maryland bridges are less invasive. Dental implants are the most conservative option, but they are also the most expensive.

Oral Care

No matter what type of bridge you get, it is important to take good care of it. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, and seeing your dentist for regular checkups. With proper care, your bridge can last for many years.

Restoration Dentistry

If you are missing one or more teeth, talk to your dentist about the best way to restore your smile. They will be able to discuss the different options available and help you choose the best option for your needs.
