Ways of Helping Your Mouth Recover After a Denture Sore

Unfortunately, it's common to experience some discomfort or even sores during this time. These sores are typically caused by rubbing or irritation from the denture against your gums or other tissues in your mouth. While they can be painful, there are several ways to help your mouth recover and adjust to your new dentures.

1. Oral Care is Key

Proper oral hygiene is crucial for both natural teeth and dentures. After getting your dentures, it's essential to continue brushing your gums, tongue, and palate twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild toothpaste. This helps remove food particles and plaque that can contribute to irritation and sores. Additionally, you should remove your dentures and soak them in a denture-cleaning solution overnight.

2. Adjustments and Modifications

If you experience persistent soreness, it's important to consult your dentist or prosthodontist. They may need to make adjustments to your dentures, such as relining them to improve the fit or reshaping areas that are causing irritation. These adjustments can significantly improve comfort and reduce the likelihood of further sores.

3. Soft Food Diet

While you're adjusting to your dentures, it's best to stick to a soft food diet. This will minimize the pressure and friction on your gums and allow them to heal properly. Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods that can irritate your mouth and dislodge your dentures. Gradually introduce more solid foods as your mouth heals and you become more comfortable with your dentures.

4. Rest and Patience

Just like any other part of your body, your mouth needs time to heal after experiencing sores. Getting enough rest and allowing your tissues to recover is crucial. Avoid activities that put stress on your mouth, such as talking excessively or singing, and give your mouth time to adjust to the new dentures.

5. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage the discomfort associated with denture sores. However, it's important to consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications.

6. Seek Professional Help

If your denture sores are severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms like bleeding or infection, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Your dentist or prosthodontist can assess the situation, determine the underlying cause of the sores, and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

By following these tips and working closely with your dental professional, you can help your mouth recover after a denture sore and enjoy the comfort and functionality of your new dentures. Remember, adjusting to dentures takes time and patience, but with proper care and attention, you can overcome any initial discomfort and achieve a healthy, confident smile.
