Posted on 12/16/2024 by Front Desk
Older patient in pain from denture sores before treatment at the Dental Implant Center at Walnut Creek in Walnut Creek, CADentures are a common way to replace missing teeth, but they can sometimes cause discomfort.

Denture sores, also known as denture stomatitis, are a type of irritation that can occur under dentures.

They can be caused by a number of factors, including ill-fitting dentures, poor oral hygiene, and overuse of denture adhesives.

Symptoms of Denture Sores

Denture sores can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

•  Pain
•  Redness
•  Swelling
•  Burning
•  Soreness
•  Difficulty eating and speaking

Causes of Denture Sores

There are a number of factors that can contribute to denture sores, including:

•  Ill-fitting dentures: Dentures that don't fit properly can rub against the gums and cause irritation.
•  Poor oral hygiene: Poor oral hygiene can allow bacteria to build up on the dentures and gums, leading to infection and inflammation.
•  Overuse of denture adhesives: Overuse of denture adhesives can irritate the gums.
•  Candida infection: Candida is a type of yeast that can cause infection in the mouth, including under dentures.
•  Trauma: Trauma to the gums, such as from biting down on something hard, can also cause denture sores.

How to Prevent Denture Sores

There are a number of things you can do to prevent denture sores, including:

•  Make sure your dentures fit properly: See your dentist regularly to make sure your dentures are still fitting properly.
•  Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your dentures and gums regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
•  Avoid overuse of denture adhesives: Only use denture adhesive as directed by your dentist.
•  See your dentist regularly: See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

How to Treat Denture Sores

If you develop denture sores, it's important to see your dentist so they can determine the cause and recommend the best treatment. Treatment for denture sores may include:

•  Adjusting your dentures: If your dentures are ill-fitting, your dentist may need to adjust them.
•  Improving your oral hygiene: Your dentist may recommend a special cleaning regimen for your dentures and gums.
•  Antifungal medication: If your denture sores are caused by a candida infection, your dentist may prescribe an antifungal medication.
•  Over-the-counter pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help to relieve pain and inflammation.

When to See a Dentist

If you have denture sores that don't improve with home treatment, or if you experience any of the following symptoms, it's important to see a dentist right away:

•  Severe pain
•  Swelling that doesn't go down
•  Redness that spreads
•  Fever
•  Difficulty swallowing
