How to Prolong the Life of Dental Crowns

Posted on 11/15/2024 by Front Desk
Cheerful pretty older woman in elegant glasses sitting on cozy home couch with dental crowns from the Dental Implant Center at Walnut Creek in Walnut Creek, CADental crowns are a great way to restore the function and appearance of a damaged or decayed tooth.

They can also be used to improve the look of a misshapen tooth or cover a dental implant.

With proper care, a crown can last for many years.

In fact, with good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, some crowns can last a lifetime. However, even with the best care, crowns will eventually need to be replaced.

Here are some tips on how to prolong the life of your dental crowns:

Practice good oral hygiene.

This is the most important thing you can do to keep your crowns in good condition.

Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day. This will help to remove plaque and bacteria, which can cause cavities and gum disease.

Avoid biting on hard objects.

Crowns are strong, but they can chip or break if you bite down on hard objects, such as ice, nuts, or candy. If you must bite on something hard, use your back teeth.

Don't grind your teeth.

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can put a lot of stress on your crowns and cause them to loosen or break. If you grind your teeth, talk to your dentist about getting a night guard.

Don't use your teeth as tools.

Crowns are not designed to be used as tools. If you use your teeth to open bottles, tear tape, or hold things, you could damage them.

See our specialists regularly.

Regular dental checkups are important for keeping your crowns healthy. Our specialists will check for any signs of wear or damage and can make repairs if necessary.

Follow their instructions.

Our specialists will also give you specific instructions on how to care for your crowns. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully.

Additional tips

In addition to the tips above, here are some other things you can do to prolong the life of your dental crowns:

•  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
•  Avoid using abrasive toothpastes or mouthwashes.
•  Don't use tobacco products.
•  Eat a healthy diet.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your dental crowns last for many years to come. If you have any questions about how to care for your crowns, be sure to talk to our team.
