Are Dentures Better Than Implants?

Posted on 4/15/2024 by Weo Admin
3d rendering of a dental implantDentures and implants are some of the most common dental solutions for replacing missing teeth. However, a few crucial aspects make one solution better than the other. We are here to delve into the characteristics of each dental solution to find out if dentures are better than implants and vice versa.

What You Should Know about Implants

If you need implants, you should have enough bone in which the dentist can place the titanium screw before capping it with replacement teeth or crowns. You also require a surgical procedure to get the titanium screw firmly implanted into your jawbone.

First, your dentist will remove the damaged tooth and let it heal before drilling a hole into the jawbone. The prosthetic root is left until the bone grows around the post, securing it permanently. When the post is implanted, it could take several months before the abutment or dental crown is placed.

What You Should Know about Dentures

You do not need much bone before having dentures designed to fit your gums. Dentures are also installed onto your gums without a complex surgical procedure. Your dentist will only take an impression of your upper or lower gums, or both, if you need dentures to replace missing teeth on both sides.

Your dentist will study the bite impression and create your dentures using that impression to ensure that the length of the dentures allows for optimal speech and chewing. Dentures are also removable and remain the most affordable option for replacing missing teeth. If you want to replace a few missing teeth, you can also have partial implants.

Closing Remarks

While dentures are affordable, they have more risks, such as jawbone deterioration. When you are missing a tooth, your body absorbs the minerals in the jaws to use it elsewhere. That leaves your jaws weak and deteriorated. The adjacent teeth also lean toward the gap left by the missing tooth. Implants are a better option to prevent further jawbone deterioration and tooth loss. Call our dentists today and find out if you are a good candidate for implants.
