Prosthodontic Treatment of Bruxism

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Front Desk
Prosthodontic Treatment of BruxismBruxism is when jaw teeth clench or grind at one another during sleep. This can lead to pain and discomfort. It can also cause damage to the teeth and gums. During prosthodontic treatments of bruxism, prosthodontists identify the cause of the condition of your teeth or mouth, come up with treatment options, and choose the appropriate treatment depending on your choice. When unattended, bruxism can lead to serious problems such as tooth sensitivity, pain, headaches, fatigue, jaw muscle spasms, and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Appliances

Several types of appliances can be used to treat bruxism, including mouth guards, night guards, and occlusal splints, among others. Each appliance has its specific purpose depending on your needs, but each one works by preventing your teeth from coming into contact, thus reducing pressure on them, which reduces pain caused by grinding your jaws.

Medications

Prosthodontists may prescribe medication to help manage your bruxism condition. Medication can be used in conjunction with other treatments, such as nightguards. This helps relieve pain and reduce the frequency of grinding at night. However, they may not stop you from grinding altogether as they don't usually work immediately.

Why is Prosthodontic Treatment of Bruxism Important?

As stated earlier, bruxism is a condition that can lead to serious problems. Therefore, managing this condition can mitigate multiple problems such as teeth breakage, loss, sensitivity, wear, and gum diseases. It will help replace your missing teeth, boost your facial appearance, protect your teeth from damage, and improve your overall quality of life. Therefore, patients suffering from bruxism should seek an immediate prosthodontic treatment option from a reliable prosthodontist within their locality.
