If you have a tooth that can't be filled we will probably recommend that you get a crown. A crown is a permanent covering that looks like a regular tooth. Once in place, the crown acts just like a natural tooth and you can eat with confidence.

When a crown is placed, it is a multi-stage process. First an impression is made of your teeth. This allows us to have a record of your bite and helps to create the custom crown. We then shave down the damaged tooth to prepare it for the crown.

Finally, we put on a temporary crown and send the impression off to make the permanent crown. Once the custom crown comes back, we remove the temporary crown and replace it with the custom crown.

What Can I Expect Once the Crown Is Placed?

When you have the temporary crown, you should avoid eating sticky foods sticky foods. This is a temporary tooth and sticky foods could pull it out of place. You can brush your teeth normally but avoid flossing in that area because it could displace the temporary crown. Temporary crowns can come off and if they do, we will put it back in place.

Once the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is cemented in place you are in business. When you first go home, your lips, tongue and teeth will likely be numb from the local anesthetic. Until you're feeling is normal we recommend that you avoid chewing. It will likely be sore when the numbness subsides and you may feel a little pressure.

This should go away fairly quickly, but if you are still feeling uncomfortable after 1 or 2 days you should call so we can adjust the crown, if possible. We recommend that you rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce the pain and swelling.
